Adverse drug events incur over 700,000 hospital admissions, and cost over $1 billion in annual healthcare expenditures across Canada. 75% of these events are preventable. One in three adverse drug events occur because healthcare providers unknowingly re-expose a patient to the same, or a same-class medication as one that previously caused harm. Repeat adverse drug events are an obvious, compelling and attractive target for intervention.
Our research focuses on designing, implementing, and evaluating innovative adverse drug event interventions in health care. We also examine the best ways to expand and keep these interventions going. Our goal is to make evidence-based methods for preventing adverse drug events more widespread across provinces and ultimately enhancing medication safety for everyone in Canada.
ActionADE is a web-based application developed, piloted, refined and implemented by our team that allows providers to document and communicate standardized adverse drug event information to providers in other health settings to prevent unintentional re-exposures to harmful medications.
